Fresh Direct’s depot in Wigan came about after we acquired two local fresh food suppliers with tonnes of industry experience. After both had been working within Fresh Direct for a few years, their teams tied the knot and their operations were merged – we even bought them a brand new pad in Ashton-in-Makerfield to seal the deal!
Wigan is a town in the north of England that can usually be found 7.9 miles south-west of Bolton, 10 miles north of Warrington and 16 miles west-northwest of Manchester… Or at least that’s what Wikipedia says! It has a population of 97,000 Wiganers, with the surrounding area housing another 318,000. The town grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution off the back of textiles and coal mining, but also off porcelain manufacture and clock making! Fancy that.
That depot is now Fresh Direct’s second largest site, sitting on 5-acres of prime Wigan concrete and housing a large 45,000sqft refrigerated warehouse. Our Wigan team are responsible for supplying fresh food to our customers in the midlands and the north, roughly speaking.
If you’re a customer in the local Greater Manchester area, make sure you pop along for a visit to see how we get things done. In fact, we recently gave our Wigan depot a bit of a spruce-up – installing a brand new development kitchen while we were at it!
